What’s for Supper? (Healthy Eating)

We’ve discussed the situation of the inevitability of dying. All born on this earth will experience this transition. The old expression: “You don’t have to be born, but you do have to die” is very true! All of this is part of the design of the Maker.

The whole theory is difficult to explain and much is conjecture, for no one knows for sure. However, there IS a plan in effect and whether you concur or not, there is “(Christian) spiritual logic” in the following:

All human beings are born into a life-cycle. In that period of time, all are presented the opportunity to ingratiate themselves to God (we call that Salvation) (see “Salvation in Jesus”, above). They also have the other choice – to NOT accept God under His conditions; they, unfortunately, will suffer the consequence!

Setting aside the spiritual aspect of life, there is another important feature: taking care of our human bodies so that we give ourselves the best opportunity to live out our unknown, but obviously pre-destined, length of life.

God is omniscient; that is, He knows everything, including how long each one of us will live. By His reasoning, He chooses not to allow us to know that. Obviously, if we knew the exact date of our death, it would be simple to live an un-Godly lifestyle and, a day or two before the end, “get right with God”. Not knowing emphasizes the need to “do it now”.

Getting back to what we can do to care for ourselves – exercise, rest & sleep, etc., the most important part is in what we feed ourselves. The first thing is quantity.  If you eat too much, the excess turns into fat that is retained within the body. Without proper exercise to “burn off” the fat, we get heavier. That strains all of our organs, especially the heart, and they will wear out prematurely.

The next thing is what we eat. In the recent Nutrition Seminar at Ridgecrest, NC, a vegetarian diet was featured. Scripturally, that seems to be the correct way. In researching the Bible regarding proper diet, in the Garden of Eden, God told man (Adam) that he could eat fruits and nuts from the trees (- except one) “in the garden”. When man fell from grace (Gen. 3:19), God told him that he could eat “herb of the field” (grain, bread).

Along with “field crops” they DID raise sheep, but indications are that those were only used as material for clothing (wool & skins) and as a sacrifice to the Lord. Not until Noah and his family survived the great flood was man ever “permitted by God” to eat (certain) meat (see Gen. 9:3).

Our bodies were designed to eat grain and fruit (nuts, too). The eating of meat places a greater strain on the digestive system in addition to the extra cholesterol in the blood stream.

a lot of beef

Did you know that, in preparing cattle for slaughter in the “fattening pens” in the mid-West, bi-carbonate of soda is added to the GRAIN that is used to fatten up and “marbleize” the fat content of the beef? That is because, after eating the hard grains added to their normal diet of grasses, the cattle suffer from upset stomach(s).  It just sticks in their stomach and ferments. More bicarb is sold to the cattle fattening industry than all the other uses in the world, combined!

When you go outside the norm in your eating, you may introduce problems.

Now, this is NOT me promoting a vegetarian diet. To do so would make me the biggest hypocrite of all! In my nearly 73 years on this planet, I have eaten just about everything (except liver & onions!) put in front of me or that is packaged in some cute box crammed full of  yummy “preservatives” (???)!

No, I am just telling you what the Bible says about our diet. If I had started earlier in my life, I may have done a little better. Even now I do try to watch a little closer what I eat, how much I eat (and WHEN I eat it).

Daniel and Joseph, in the Old Testament, are good examples of selecting the vegetarian diet. They were as strong or stronger than anyone else in their “groups”. And, they were definitely “winners”.

Maybe we can extend our lives on this earth by better choices in what we eat.

Eat mor chikin’!
