No other subject matter in the Bible has more speculation associated with it than the infamous “mark of the beast”. In the Book of Revelation the anti-Christ is referred to as “the beast”, and there is a lot that describes him, so that “the people” will be alerted to what anti-Christ will be doing.
From Rev. 13:4 (NIV) “- – - they worshiped the beast (anti-Christ), saying, “Who is like the beast? Who is able to make war with him?”. Later, when he takes on his role as the destroyer, verses 16-18 say: “He causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man: His number is 666.“
Astounding! SO much to consider. How will the people know how to recognize his true nature before it is too late? Will this number be a tattoo or of indelible ink on the right hand or the forehead? Will all who have been marked walk around, boasting of the mark? Will it be like the serial number tattoo the Germans forcibly place on the Jews arms before and during WWII?
In 1979 I attended a Texas Instruments seminar on telephone equipment, and while at their facility they showed a new device they had developed (for their security system). As you walked through a large plastic “tunnel” or tube (similar to airport scanners) they could “read” the information on an employee ID card in the wallet that was still in the pocket or purse!
Would this or any of the above be the kind of method used for their mark?
More than likely, variations of the above! With our modern technology, it could probably be by an injection of a micro-capsule that will be encoded with information. You are probably aware of this procedure already. For a number of years animal owners have been “marking” their dogs, cats and other pets with an under-the-skin injection of one of the capsules. They are simple, inserted fairly pain-free and, with the proper “decoder” reader, the owner information is easily retrieved.
Some hospitals have considered doing this with newborn babies, to prevent accidental “baby swapping” that sometimes occurs while in the hospital, resulting in the wrong baby being given to the mother.
Therein lies the potential problem. If a parent approves their newborn or even an older child to receive this implant, could the anti-Christ and his workers use that to their advantage, as a “mark”? What information will be put into that data?
My thought is, even though the Scripture is clear that the recipient of the mark would submit himself (willingly), it seems a little scary to perchance jeopardize one’s child by having that micro-chip embedded in him/her, possibly with the unique number! More on that later.
Now comes the part that might be hard to understand. Mind you, this is speculation, based on where we are in this technological time. The Scripture shown above says, “Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast – - - “. Insertion of micro-chips could not be done a mere fifteen years ago, for we didn’t have the technology (knowledge/wisdom). Fifty years ago, we didn’t have the knowledge! One thousand years ago all they could have done would have been to use tattoos!
Now, let’s discuss the number 666. As I said, there has been SO much speculation since that appeared in the Book of Revelation. But, NOW we have more “wisdom”. Man’s perceptiveness has exponentially expanded over the years, and in the past one hundred years, our knowledge and understanding has grown more than the previous 3,000 years combined!
Obviously, not everyone is going to walk around with “666″ emblazoned upon their foreheads. Here is a very possible direction that it may go. Let me use some modern examples, things we can “understand”:
I know you don’t usually look at your credit card numbers except when you are buying a SHAM WOW or your favorite fragrance on QVC, but you will notice that most of the major cards have 16 numbers (AMEX uses 15); four groups of four numbers: ex. 8345-1296-9909-1234. The reason these four 4-number groups were chosen is that by using these 16-number combinations there are enough numbers to provide one for everyone who has ever been born in the USA (since 1492). I’m not sure of the total number available, but more than 1 billion.
However, if they used that numbering system to try to set up a world or universal numbering system, they would eventually run out of numbers. But, IF you use three groups of six numbers (a total of 18 digits), there would be sufficient numbers available to give one to every human being currently on earth and all who have ever lived since Adam and Eve – in the multi-billions!
Now, let’s arrange a few random numbers, thusly:
More than likely THIS will be the form of the number that is known as “six-six-six”! Any assortment of 18 random digits will provide the billions or trillions of account numbers needed for a “project” of this enormity.
In “Bible Numerology” six is “the number of man” and three is “the number of the Godhead”. Six-six-six also means: “man (#6) trying to be God (#3)”.
If our government or our soon-to-be “World Community” wants to give you a card that has 18 numbers, refuse it! That would be “step one”. Next, those 18 numbers could easily be placed on a micro-chip and inserted in the back of your right hand or your forehead by anyone, even your grocery store clerk, barber or beautician; easier than a Botox treatment!
Whether you accept this writing as reasonable or not, IF you see these things start to happen, remember: you have been warned !

Interesting theory. Many people in the US have theorized that our social security number is this mark. If there were a ‘one world government’…I could definately see the SS number being the model for this mark of the beast. I must also consider that John was writing as you say about things that had not been invented…tanks missles etc. So the 666 could also be figurative, and could be some other ‘grouping’ of numbers..or something completly different. I am hesitant to translate prophecies in a ‘static’ way. I prefer to leave them ‘open’. I prefer to say, “I am ‘understanding’ this”, rather than say,”I understand this”. After all, God says to “open the book”, He does not say to ‘close the book’ in Rev 22. If we assume…..we ‘conclude’. If we conclude, we turn of our acceptance for further revelation. We turn off God’s ability to ‘reveal’ further to us. God is just ‘now’ opening the book. We cannot rush to consider it closed.
